Golf Etiquette

Etiquette is comprised largely of unwritten rules of behaviour passed on by word of mouth from one generation of golfers to the next.  Etiquette is mainly about respect. Good etiquette is the mark of the true golfer.  Here are some guidelines:

  • Exhibit conduct that is both considerate and sporting.

  • Respect the rights of other members, the staff, and management of the golf club.

  • Never approach fellow members or staff with demanding, abusive or threatening language, in person or in any form of communication.

  • Encourage other golfers but do not provide unsolicited advice to fellow golfers.

  • Remain silent when other members of the group are on the tee.

  • Be aware of the pace of play.  If there is a gap of more than one hole between your group & the previous group, gently remind the members of your group of the need to speed up.

  • Fulfill the duties of membership & participate in the management of the club if required.

Required Games

  • Games will be played every Monday with the exception of Statutory Holidays

  • A minimum of 8 Monday games must be played to ensure membership the following year. If a health condition should arise which prevents you from playing the required 8 games, please inform the Membership Coordinator as soon as you are aware of the problem by emailing OLGCmembership@gmail.com.

  • Membership fees are non refundable.

 Tee Time Procedures

  • First tee off time is at 8:30 a.m. in May, June and September and 8 a.m. in July and August. You will sign up 10 to 12 days in advance via the email form sent to you, the Golf Captain will assign the groups for tee times, and will post them on the website a week in advance.

Guidelines for Rainy Days

  • If it is raining prior to tee off and Scarlett Woods calls a rain day, no attendance credit will be given.

  • If you start to play before the rain starts and are rained out credit will be given for a game played.

  • If it is a light rain and you need the credit, you can play as few or as many holes as you like and you will be given credit.

Speed of Play - Please keep the play moving!

Teeing Off

  • Be ready to tee off once the previous group is far enough ahead.

  • Know your ball or put a mark on it to easily identify it.

  • The person who is “ball ready” tees off first.

  • Mulligans are allowed once every 9 holes except on Tournament days.

  • Have 2 balls in your pocket, so that you have a ball when needed.

On the Fairway

  • If you have not reached the green after 4 strokes on a par 3, or after 5 strokes on a par 4, pick up your ball and place it on the edge of the green and putt out.

  • If two players are on opposite sides of the fairway, or in the rough, they can go to their respective balls at the same time and prepare to hit their shots.

  • Don’t spend an unreasonable amount of time searching for lost balls.

On the Green

  • Leave your cart where it will not block play.

  • Balls should be marked and removed when in the path of others.

  • The person farthest from the hole putts first.

  • When putting, never walk across another player’s putt line.

  • The “Gimme” system may be used if ball is closer than 6 inches to the hole, except in tournament play, when putting for par or less, or if claiming recognition for a birdie or an eagle.

  • The foursome should leave the green quickly by exiting to the rear of the green and back of or behind the adjacent sand trap.
